Although the official name of this sacred building is the Church of Santa Margherita dei Cerchi<\/strong>, it is commonly known as the Church of Dante and Beatrice.<\/p>\n

This name is not accidental, since the church is located only 50 meters from the birthplace<\/strong> of the great Florentine poet (now the Museo Casa di Dante<\/em>) and is for many a symbol of his love affair with Beatrice Portinari<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dedicated to Saint Margaret of Antiochia<\/strong>\u00a0the name of this church is not limited to its religious dedication, but also extends to the historic Cerchi<\/strong> family, which has been responsible for the patronage of this small but important place of worship since 1353.<\/p>\n

Initially, the patronage was shared with other influential families of the time, such as the Donati and Adimari families, but in the seventeenth century the Cerchi family assumed exclusive control of the church, further consolidating its ties with this religious institution.<\/p>\n

The building, which was first mentioned in 1032<\/strong>, underwent numerous transformations in the centuries that followed, testifying to the various architectural influences and the needs of the community that welcomed it over time.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The meeting between Dante and Beatrice<\/span><\/h2>\n

The narrower appellation of “Dante’s Church<\/strong>” is rooted in the tradition that the great Florentine poet celebrated his marriage to Gemma Donati<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n

This painting not only enriches the environment with its vivid colors and stylistic refinements, but also represents an important moment of devotion, evoking the presence of the saints accompanying the central figure of the Madonna.<\/p>\n

The first<\/strong> painting was created by Mario D’Elia<\/strong> and depicts the meeting between Dante and Beatrice<\/strong>, the latter accompanied by her mother Cilia De’ Caponsacchi and Monna Tessa.<\/p>\n

The second<\/strong> is the blessing of Dante and Beatrice by Prior Roberto Tassi, while the third<\/strong> painting is very iconic and poignant for Dante.<\/p>\n

The work, dated 1928, depicts the bride Beatrice leaving the church with her groom. Dante is depicted on the right in a sad and suffering pose.<\/p>\n
