2023 Florence Marathon: a great sporting event not to be missed

The Florence Marathon is one of the most anticipated marathons of the year and this year, its 39th edition, promises to be even more exciting than usual. The 2023 Florence Marathon will take place, as is tradition, on the last Sunday of November along a course of 42.195 km.

For the 2023 edition, on Sunday, November 26, at 8:30am, over 10,000 athletes will take part.

The route of the Florence marathon

The race starts and ends in the beautiful piazza Duomo where runners will feel like true heroes as they cross the streets lined with enthusiastic well-wishers. The route takes runners towards the Parco delle Cascine, a green oasis that offers a pleasant break from the feverish excitement of the start.

The most incredible moment will be, without doubt, crossing the Ponte Vecchio. This famous bridge, with its characteristic stores, is one of the most iconic symbols of Florence. The athletes will be able to admire its beauty as they cross it, feeling themselves an integral part of the city’s thousand-year history.

After running along the Lungarno, the runners will head towards the Asics Florence Marathon Stadium. This modern stadium will be the turning point of the race, where the athletes can stock up on water and gather their energy to face the last kilometers.

The return to the piazza Duomo will be a moment of great joy and satisfaction for all the participants. They will be welcomed by a party atmosphere and spectators cheering them on as they complete the few remaining meters. Running along over 150 streets, the athletes will be able to appreciate Florence’s Renaissance architecture and will feel part of a sporting tradition whose roots stretch far back in time.

Runners will wear t-shirts, in purple and gray, with an image that combines mythology and culture.

The Florence marathon has become a hugely important international event, drawing professional athletes and enthusiasts from all over the world. Each year, thousands of people line the streets of the city to support the athletes and enjoy the event. The atmosphere is electrifying, with bands playing live music along the route and enthusiastic spectators cheering on the participants.

The history of the marathon

The first Florence marathon was held in 1984 and 850 athletes took part. With the passage of time, the marathon has grown steadily, becoming the second most popular marathon in Italy after Rome, reaching 10,000 participants in 2010 from 57 countries.

The last edition was won by the Ethiopian, Debele Fikadu Kebede, who, in the men’s race, failed - by just 5 seconds - to beat the record set in 2006 by the Kenya, James Jutto, (2.08'40"). The 2023 edition is, then, the opportunity to finally break the record. In the women’s race, victory was taken by another Ethiopian, Atsede Tesema Baysa.

The events for the 2023 Florence Marathon

An array of secondary events is planned, designed to liven up the city even more. It starts with the Expo Village, November 24-25, where all the main companies in the sector will be present with conferences and interviews with personalities from the world of sport. And again this year, the Ginky Family Run will be held, a short itinerary designed for families with young children.

The Florence Marathon has reached an outstanding level of organization and the entire city is involved, from institutions to bodies involved with tourism and accommodation.
