Let's find out together where to go and what to do on Halloween in Rome:
Santa Maria dell'Orazione e Morte
This church built in the 16th century welcomes visitors with the inscription “Hodie mihi, cras tibi,” or “Today to me, tomorrow to you.” It is about 2 km from the hotel and was built by the Company of Oration and Death. Those who want to have a truly unforgettable experience can do so by visiting the basement, with the crypt and what remains of the ancient cemetery. Here the Company buried more than 8,000 people, drowned in the Tiber, found in the countryside or in different areas of the capital. Bones and skeletons are still present. And some of them have engraved on their foreheads the year and cause of death;
Museum of the Souls in Purgatory
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Suffrage is a very special place. Inside it we can experience all year round the suspended atmosphere, typical of Halloween, of the closeness between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead. We find all this in the small museum kept inside. The museum was born in the early 19th century with the discovery, after a fire, of the imprint of a face behind the altar. The priest became convinced that it was a sign of the presence of a soul in purgatory seeking prayers. From that moment, the priest began to collect similar testimonies. The result was a unique and eerie collection. It is located a few minutes' walk from the hotel;
Crypt of the Capuchins
Just over a kilometer from the hotel, in the basement of the Church of St. Mary of the Conception, we find this cemetery decorated with the bones of more than 4,000 friars. The remains come from the Order's ancient cemetery and were collected between 1528 and 1870. A place worthy of Halloween, where we can see the mummified bodies of friars dressed in habit and hood, but also skulls, femurs, shinbones, scattered bones forming chandeliers or other compositions;
Castel Sant'Angelo
There is no bridge of the dead without ghosts. It seems that Castel Sant'Angelo is particularly frequented by the spirits of prisoners in the castle's jails. But also by Beatrice Cenci, who was beheaded for patricide in 1599. About 2 miles from the hotel;
Torre degli Annibaldi
With its austere and sinister appearance, this tower is also striking for an anecdote about it. On its walls were nailed the severed hands of those who had tried to steal from the church. 240 meters from the hotel;
Fonte di Anna Perenna
About 5 km from the hotel. Remains were found here bearing the name of Anna Perenna, one of the most mysterious Roman gods. The mud also returned about 20 defixiones, or curses, a burned copper pot and containers with voodoo dolls inside stuffed upside down;
Complesso del Buon Pastore
Just over 7 km from the hotel, inside the Valle dei Casali, here is the visionary citadel built by Armando Brasini between 1929 and 1938.
From Rome you can reach some striking and unique locations, perfect for the All Saints' Day long weekend:
Chia
In the heart of Tuscia, in Soriano nel Cimino, we find the ghost town of Chia, with its striking tower and the nearby Cascate di Fosso Castello waterfalls;
Camerata Vecchia
74km from the hotel are the ruins of this ancient village. Located 1255 meters above sea level, the village offers a breathtaking view of the Cavaliere Plain. In 1859 a fire that spread from a dwelling quickly destroyed the entire village. The village can be reached on foot. Here we have the opportunity to admire historical artifacts and enter some of the dwellings. A short distance away is the Camposecco plateau, the location of several scenes from the film They Called It Trinity;
Monerano
It is the quintessential ghost town. Sixty-four kilometers from the hotel lies a location rich in ruins, with architectural masterpieces by Bernini. Among the must-see works is the 16th-century double-arch aqueduct;
Rocchette and Rocchettine
The twin fortresses stand on two rocks in the Sabine Hills. They were built during the 13th century and still retain a mysterious and somber charm;
Stazzano Vecchio
Abandoned for more than a century, the village saw the beginning of its end during April 24, 1901, when an earthquake almost completely destroyed it. Intact, however, is its charm. The hamlet is overgrown with vegetation, but we can walk through its old streets and recognize traces of habitation. We can still see the castle walls and the three circular towers with the 25-meter-high quadrangular tower in the center of the courtyard.
