Do you want to experience Christmas in Florence and spend the holidays in the cradle of the Renaissance? There is no better time of year to let yourself be enchanted by the Florentine atmosphere, always evocative, but able to further express itself in the period preceding one of the most awaited celebrations of the year.
The entire city transforms from the day of the Immaculate Conception. On December 8 each year, the lights are lit on the Christmas tree in the Piazza del Duomo, with its white lights and fleur-de-lis in different colors ready to illuminate a unique, extraordinary backdrop.
The same location is also home to the nativity scene with life-size shepherds and figures. The grounds of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the location of one of the most important works of the period.

Over the Christmas period Florence hosts numerous events and attractions and offers visitors an enormous number of opportunities.
You can take in musical and cultural events, experience the magic of the illuminations, visit museums and look out for the city’s symbols wrapped in the magic of Christmas. You can stroll the streets at any time, day or night, and let yourself be enchanted by the unique atmosphere that is Florence at Christmas.
One of the things every visitor should do is visit the Christmas markets, the most important one being found in Piazza Santa Croce.
From the end of November until the last days of December, it attracts many visitors who are eager to find the perfect decoration, the perfect souvenir to take home, or the perfect gift.
We can find many items dedicated to Christmas but also toys, artisan products, clothes and typical foods.
In addition to the market at Santa Croce, you shouldn’t miss another special, Florentine type of market - the Fierucolina in Piazza del Carmine. It is a perfect place for families, with stalls of agricultural products, workshops for children and guided tours of the Brancacci Chapel.
Another location that should be on everyone’s itinerary is the Piazza del Duomo, home to the large Christmas tree and the nativity scene on the grounds of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.
Afterwards, it’s always fun to wander the streets and piazzas to take in the many other Christmas trees set up in Piazza della Signoria, Piazza della Repubblica, Piazzale Michelangelo, Piazza Pitti, Piazza della Santissima Annunziata and Piazza Santa Maria Novella.
